Lidl has changed the conditions of its loyalty scheme app ‘Lidl Plus’, meaning its users will have to spend more money to earn the largest rewards.

Previously shoppers could earn £10 off a spend in the future if they spent at least £200 at the supermarket over the course of a month. Now shoppers will need to spent at least £250 over a month to earn a 10% voucher for a maximum of £20 off.

Effectively users of the loyalty scheme would need to spend a further £100 on a future transaction to get £10 off (10% of £100) totalling at £350 in total.

The news comes months after Lidl had a Black Friday sale advertisement banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for failing to substantiate savings claims.

The German discounter has said that the loyalty scheme app change means “more customers get more rewards, more often”.

It has also introduced a new offer of earning a free own-brand cleaning product when customers spend at least £150 over a month.

Two days ago Costa Coffee announced that it had generated an extra £1.2 million in incremental profit each month since the launch of its own loyalty scheme this time last year.
